HISTORY OF THE T. BENNY RUSHING MATHEMATICS CENTER>>
History
The construction of the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center (commonly called the Math Center) took place in conjunction with a renovation of the LeRoy E. Cowles Building. Construction, made possible through a generous donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, was started in April 2000 and completed in December 2001. The Math Center is a math haven for undergraduate students and their studies. Students receive free tutoring for select math department courses, have access to a computer lab, and study in one of our group study rooms, or independently at one of the individual study desks.
The center was named after T. Benny Rushing, who was a professor of mathematics at the U for nearly 30 years. In his tenure, he served twice as chair of the Department of Mathematics and led the College of Science as Dean from 1993-1997. A significant part of his effort in these roles was to make the Math Center's existence possible.

Tutoring/Computer Lab Information
The Department of Mathematics offers free drop-in tutoring within the Math Center for the following math classes:
- Math 980
- All 1000 and 2000 level department courses
- Math 3070-3080 (Statistics), Math 3140-3150 (PDEs), and Math 3160 (Complex Variables)
- Math 3210-3220 (Foundations of Analysis - tutoring times for these courses are on the next tab)
All of our tutors can help students with algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. For other subjects, please check the schedule below to see when someone who can help you will be in.
The Mathematics Computer Lab is located in the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Center, room 155C. Students enrolled in a math class have login access and mathematics software packages are available on the computers. Lab assistants are there to help with programs and languages. Each lab assistant is skilled in different areas, so check the Programs & Languages column below to determine the assistants best suited to your needs. By using a math department account, you are agreeing to abide by our computer account policy.

The math center has several individual study desks and four group study rooms. This study space is available anytime the math buildings are open. The group study rooms may be reserved by math majors or by study groups for math department classes. To reserve a room, please contact Director of Undergraduate Services.
EMPLOYMENT
Applications for tutor, grader, and computer lab assistant positions are available online on the links below. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, although hiring generally takes place before fall semester, and on occasion before spring semester. Please complete the application and provide at least one, and preferably two, recommendation forms to be completed by your math instructors. Completed applications may be submitted to the Mathematics Department office in JWB 233.
-
To be considered for a tutoring position, one should have completed the Calculus series and taken at least one math class beyond Calculus.
-
To be considered for a computer lab assistant position, one should have a good working knowledge of UNIX and be familiar with the software frequently used by students in the lab, as well as a good math background.
-
To be considered for a grading position, it is best if one has completed at least the Calculus series.
