Summer 2008 project description

Both Sean Maass and Sanford Clark will work under Peter Roper's supervision on mathematical models in neuroscience. This summer we propose to read papers related both to neuroscience and also to the techniques involved in describing neural systems mathematically. Our aim is both to learn how neurons function, and to gain experience in how they can be modelled, and we will focus on how neurons and networks of neurons in the hippocampus contribute to the development of epilepsy. We will first use the computer packages Matlab and XPPaut to reproduce published results, and our long term goal is to develop original mathematical models of some aspects of neural cell biology and physiology.
