Topic: Geometry through Lie groups

Dates of program: June 13 - July 1, 2011

Organizer: Kevin Wortman

Travel support, on-campus housing, and stipend funds are available for US citizens, nationals, and permanent residents.

Purpose

Our program will introduce undergraduates to Lie groups, Riemannian manifolds, and discrete group actions.

Participants will be introduced to research by being presented with open ended problems to explore. We do not necessarily expect publishable results to follow directly from our workshop, but we do expect to otherwise create a comprehensive research experience with the aim of providing participants with a more informed opinion from which to make decisions about advancing their mathematics education.

The only prerequisites are multivariable calculus and linear algebra.

Eligibility

Funding is only available for US citizen or permanent residents who are currently registered in an accredited undergraduate program.
Students who are not US citizens, permanent residents can also apply for an unfunded position.

Application Process

To apply: We dont accept applications anymore

Applicants to this program are also encouraged to apply to the Park City Undergraduate Summer School, meeting immediately after the REU,
from July 3-23, 2011
Park City Mathematics Institute's Summer Program.
