Program Overview
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Utah has a research group consisting of 5 faculty, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 26 graduate students, whose work is at the forefront of mathematical biology research and education.
Research in Mathematical Biology is in four broad areas: Biofluids, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Neuroscience and Physiology. The goal of this effort is to use mathematical reasoning and techniques to gain insights into complex biological phenomena.

2008 Fall Course Offering
Math 5110: Mathematical Biology I
Math 5110 is designed to introduce the mathematically apt
to some of the basic models and methods of mathematical biology.
No previous knowledge of biology is necessary.
Math 5470/6440: Chaos and Nonlinear Systems
Chaos is everywhere around us from fluid flow and the weather
forecast to the stock exchange and striking geometric images.
The theory of nonlinear dynamical systems uses bifurcations,
attractors and fractals to describe the chaotic behavior of real
world things. The course gives an introduction to chaotic motions,
strange attractors, fractal geometry.
Math
6730: Perturbation Methods
This course will survey singular perturbation analysis, covering
topics such as boundary layers and matched asymptotic analysis,
multiscale methods, averaging, homogenization. Applications will be
drawn from a variety of areas of biology, chemistry, physics, fluid
dynamics and material science.
Math 6760: Continuum Mechanics (Solid Mechanics)
Math 6770: Mathematical Biology (Systems Physiology)
This course will describe the dynamics of physiological systems.
Included will be blood and circulation, cardiac dynamics, respiration,
muscle dynamics, renal function, hormonal dynamics, vision and
hearing.
