Text: Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher
The book is available online at the link if you don't want to purchase a hard copy.
Course description: This will be a standard graduate course in
algebraic topology. I plan to cover chapters 0-3 of the
book (omitting many topics). The course will prepare students for the algebraic topology half of the department's geometry/topology qualifying exam.
Homework: There will be regular homework, some of which I may have you do in groups. Homework assignments will be posted below and submitted on Gradescope.
Deadlines: This is a graduate course and my general belief is that you
should be in the best position to manage your own time. This will certainly
be necessary once your focus turns to research. On the other hand it is
good to have some structure. With this in mind I will set due dates for the
homework but if you would like to turn in your homework late you should
write me to arrange a new deadline. I will generally approve any reasonable
requests (perhaps after asking for some clarification) but these new dead-
lines will be strict. You should plan on taking both the midterm and final
at the scheduled time. If you cannot you should let me know as soon as
possible and these requests will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Midterm: The midterm will (tentatively) be on February 24th in class. However, this may change depending on how the course progresses.
Quizzes: I may give a few short quizzes during the semester. If so I will let you know at least a week in advance. The grading scheme will then be adjusted accordingly.
Final: The final exam will is on Friday, April 28th from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Grades: Your final grade will 30% homework, 30% the midterm and 40% the final. This is a qual class. An "A" in the course corresponds to a high pass on the qual. An "A-" or "B+" is a pass.
