The Master of Arts degree differs from the Master of Science degree only in that it requires proficiency in French, German, or Russian. The Master of Science Degree has no language requirement.
Both degrees require approximately two years of advanced course work, and completion of a Master's project which usually takes the form of a thesis.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree requires more course work and, most importantly, demonstration of originality and ability in independent mathematical research in the form of a doctoral dissertation.
The Master of Philosophy degree has the same requirements as the Ph.D. degree, except that it does not require completion of a doctoral dissertation.
