Title: Undergraduate research in mathematics, getting it started and keeping it going

Abstract: In this minicourse, we will discuss some of the basics of advising undergraduate students in original research in mathematics. Topics will include selection of students, topics of research, finding appropriate problems, likely and desired outcomes, what to do with results, assigning possible credit to the students and workload for the advisor, and funding sources. National Science Foundation funded REU programs will be mentioned, but the discussion will primarily focus on smaller programs with students from the advisor's home institution. A topic of emphasis will be how to run a research seminar for faculty and students that is an effective way to recruit research participants, introduce a research area, and get participants started on independent research. Time permitting, some examples of recent student research will be presented.
