pre-REU 2024: Expanding circle maps, digit expansions and topological Markov chains
when:
- July 15 (Monday) - August 9 (Friday), 2024
- 9:30am - 3:00pm Mountain Time on weekdays.
where:
- The University of Utah campus, exact room TBA
who:
- The program will accept University of Utah students who are enrolled in or considering a math-adjacent major. Students from historically marginalized groups in mathematics are particularly encouraged to apply!
- The program content is targeted at students finishing their first or second year at the U who have completed at least Calculus II (or equivalent) and have not yet completed a foundations of analysis course.
what:
- The program is intended to give a flavor of mathematical research and generate excitement and preparation for REU programs.
- You will be introduced to mathematical research, by studying abstract dynamical systems, and the idea of coding with symbolic dynamical systems. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Degree and topology of the circle, topological Markov chains, and dynamical cocycles.
- You will work closely with other students and program staff while solving interesting problems.
- You will develop skills, knowledge, and confidence for future success in mathematics in an inclusive, supportive, and enthusiastic environment.
stipend:
- Participants will be PAID a $2,000 stipend for their participation.
- Funding available for US citizens only. Exceptional international candidates may be considered for funding on an ad-hoc basis.
