Math 3070-5: On-Line Course Syllabus
Spring Semester 2002
- The final exam will be given on May 7, 2002.
Some of you
have indicated that the time (8:30-10:30 p.m.) is inconvenient.
We can try to get a room for this exam from 7:30-9:30 p.m. that day instead.
The only way that this change can be made possible is if I hear,
in writing, from all of you saying that this change is agreeable
to you, and fits your schedule.
If you feel that you want to change the time to that indicated
above, you should email
me before the end of April 26th and clearly say so.
The only way that I will change the posted time is if I hear from
all of you by April 26th, and in the affirmative.
The final exam is open-book
but closed-notes. |
Make sure to bring your books and calculators.
- Practice Final Exam:
- Solve Midterm #2, and the homeworks.
- A new quality training program is being tested at an auto parts
manufacturing plant. For one type of part, the following table
gives the numbers of defective and good parts manufactured in
the week preceding and the week following the program:
Quality | Before | After | Total |
Good | 121
| 154 | 275 |
Defective |
46 | 19 | 65 |
Total |
167 | 173 | 340

Do these data suggest that the program is effective?
- According to a survey sponsored by the American Society for
Microbiology, 50% of the people using the restrooms in New York
City's Penn Station do not wash their hands after going
to the bathroom (Associated Press, Sept. 19, 2000).
Suppose that you observe 427 people who fail to
wash their hands in a random sample of 1,000 people
from Penn Station. This is less than 50%; is this
discrepancy real or due to chance? Use this
data to test the claim made
by the American Society for Microbiology at 95%.
- Oncology Nursing Forum (July 2000)
published a study of the effects of advanced nursing care
on quality of life of women with breast cancer. Breast cancer
patients were randomly assigned to either an intervention
group or a control group. All patients received standard
medical care, but those in the intervention group
received additional care from an advanced practice nurse
(APN). The next table describes the number of patients who
needed to make at least one emergency room visit doing
the study period. Are the percentages of breast cancer
patients who make emergency room visits for the two groups
the same or is the one higher for the control group?
