East Canyon drive [12 October 2003]

East Canyon lies directly east of Salt Lake City, and the drive from the exit on I-80 takes one north over the mountains, down to the reservoir, meeting up with I-84, then west to Ogden, and south on I-15 to Salt Lake City, about a 150km round trip.

There is a Web site for the state park here; the photos link from that page was taken when there was more water.

There is a big collection of Utah travel photos here.

East Canyon Reservoir is very low after five years of drought in Utah.

Weber river looking west. This is one of only three rivers that flow into the Great Salt Lake. The others are the Jordan (pronounced Jerdin in Utahese) river, which flows from the `freshwater' (but polluted by Geneva Steel) Utah Lake west of Provo (80km south of Salt Lake City) through Zion into the now much-diminished Great Salt Lake, and the Bear river, which flows from the north end of the state.

Capitol Reef National Park trip [18--19 October 2003]

The official Web sites for the park are here and here, and there are commercial Web sites here and here, and a noncommercial one here. All have photo archives.

Another park map (from the noncommercial site above);
Along US89 near Fairview (which lies east of Nephi which is on I-15).
Church in Mt. Pleasant or maybe Spring City (along US89).
Weathered tree east of Spring City.
On top of the mountains on Skyline Drive in Manti-La Sal National Forest. Not shown is the very rugged road up Spring Canyon from Spring City that left Margaret hanging on tightly in the car which was creeping uphill in first gear trying to keep out of the deep ruts. This weekend was the opening of deer-hunting season, and every level spot along the road had campers, trailers, ATVs, and orange-jacketed hunters of all ages and several sexes. We saw only a couple of deer killed by hunters, but there were a half-dozen deer killed by vehicles along the highways, and four live ones near the highway west of the Park.
View west down into the valley that holds US89, Fairview, Mt. Pleasant, Spring City, Ephraim, and Manti.
View down to Spring City.
View down to Ephraim; Skyline Drive was sufficiently rough that we bailed off early, instead of carrying on south and east to reach highway 10 and I-70.
Heading east from Torrey into Capitol Reef National Park.

Wash along the Park drive. In thunderstorms, the road is closed because it is impassable in many places, because washes cross it. In the summer of 2002, a flash flood 4m deep went down Grand Wash just north and to the right of this view; that wash is 25m to 50m wide.
