MATH PLACEMENT

The math classes you take will depend on your major and interests. There are different ways to determine your beginning math courses at the University of Utah:

Taken ACT/SAT or Accuplacer Exam Within the Last Two Years...

You can use our math placement guide to determine which math course you will take:

Taken AP Calculus Exam Within the Last Two Years and Received a 3 or Better..

You can see your placement with the AP Placement Guide. If you took the exam more than two years ago you can either take a Math Boot Camp (see at bottom of page) to renew your placement or talk to an Undergraduate Advisor about placement.

Taken a Math Class at Another Institution and Received a C or Better...

Make sure your college transcripts have been submitted to the Admissions Office. High school transcripts are not accepted for prerequisites. If the course was taken outside of Utah you will also need to submit the Transfer Course Evaluation Form

Wish to Challenge Your Initial Math Placement or Your Test Scores are Expired...

You may take (OR retake- after a one week waiting period) the Accuplacer (math placement exam). To schedule the Accuplacer, or for information on how to take it elsewhere, visit the Testing Center webpage.

If you still have questions about which math class to take, first see the Registration Issues page.

ACCUPLACER INFORMATION

The Accuplacer is a computer-based test, and this allows it to be adaptive to your particular skill level.  For example, if you do well on the first questions, it may skip questions that may be too easy for you, and move directly on to a more difficult type of question.  All students begin with the Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Statistics (QAS) questions.  With a QAS score of at least 260 you will be moved into the Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF) questions.

  • Preparation-
    • There is a free study app that you can download from accuplacer.org -> Click on ”Information for Students” -> “Practice Resources” -> “Get the free Accuplacer practice app.” -> Create a free account. We are using the “Next-Generation Practice Tests”.
    • Lecture Videos:
      • There are some math videos on our website (the videos start with Math 1010), click here.
      • A lot of students also like the videos on Khan Academy, click here.

If you have questions about your score or about which math class is most appropriate for you, please email the Math Advisors or the advisor for your major.
