Math Placement

The math classes you take will depend on your major and interests. There are different ways to determine your beginning math courses at the University of Utah:

If you have taken the ACT/SAT or Accuplacer exam within the last two years you can use our QA Placement Guide.

If you have taken the AP Calculus exam within the last two years and received a 3 or better you can see your placement with the AP Placement Guide. If you took the exam more than two years ago you can either take a Math Bootcamp (see below) to renew your placement or talk to an undergraduate advisor about placement.

If you have taken a math class at another institution and received a C or better, make sure your college transcripts have been submitted to the Admissions Office. High school transcripts are not accepted for prerequisites. If the course was taken outside of Utah you will also need to submit the transfer course evaluation form

You may register for a lower level math course than indicated by your placement.

If you wish to challenge your initial math placement, or your test scores are expired, you may take (or retake, after a one week waiting period) the Accuplacer math placement exam. To schedule the Accuplacer, or for information on how to take it elsewhere, visit the Testing Center webpage.

If you still have questions about which math class to take, first see the Registration Issues page, and if you still have questions contact a Mathematics Undergraduate Advisor.
