Notes
-
(1) More than Math 221, approximates Mth
2270.
-
(2) Math 112 & 113 in one semester.
-
(3) Covers Lin Alg & Vector Calc,
approx's Mth 2210 plus missing part of Mth 2250.
The above flow chart should be given to anyone in
your department involved in 1st year Math advising during
the transition period 1997-1998 (quarters) through 1998-1999
(semesters). This chart provides what I feel are reasonable
paths for this period for students in the various areas, and
suggest ways to make the change over most efficient. The
first half is for Mathematics Majors or Science or
Engineering Majors who want a stronger mathematics emphasis.
It should be used for students attempting a DOUBLE MAJOR,
where one of the majors is in mathematics. The second half
is for Science or Engineering Majors based on generic
requirements many of you seem to have been using in the
past, and merely gives ideas on possible paths you may want
to modify.
Some further comments may be useful.
-
Math 111-112-113 will be similar to what will be done in
Mth 1210-1220 under semesters. (Mth 1215-1225 will be
the same thing with an added plus of a Maple component.)
This will be essentially standard 1-variable calculus,
plus material on partials and on differential equations.
Mth 2210 will do the multivariate material.
-
Math 211-212-213 will be much like this sequence of
previous years. It will still be a 1st year calculus
course, and, in fact, uses the same text as Math
111-112-113. But it is run at a higher level, works
harder problems, and may include more theory. It also
will cover more than the new 100-level sequence. It
will do as much multivariate material as time will
permit so Mth 2210 may then be omitted. When we change
to semesters, Mth 1250-1260 (AP Calculus) will cover in
2 semesters what we will do in the three semester Mth
1210,1220, 2210 (Calculus I, II, III). Under semesters,
AP students with an AB test score of 4 or 5 will be
recommended to take Mth 1250; AP students with a BC test
score of 3, 4, or 5 will be recommended to take Mth
1260. AP students with an AB test score of 3 will be
recommended to take Mth 1220. The key point is that
students taking Math 213 or Mth 1260 will not need to
take Mth 2210.
-
Mth 1400 is a special one time course offered Autumn
1998 which will allow students having credit for
Math 111 to complete the remaining topics of Math
112-113 in one semester. (They may also do this Summer
1998 via intensive calculus.)
-
Spring Quarter 1998, Math 221 will meet an
extra day so as to cover much that we will cover in Mth
2270 (Linear Algebra), which then may be omitted.
-
Mth 2500 is a special one time course offered Autumn
1998 which will allow students having credit for
Math 251 (ODEs) to complete the remaining topics from
Linear Algebra and Vector Calculus in one semester. Thus
Math 251 + Mth 2500 will essentially be Mth 2210 (Vector
Calculus) + Mth 2250 (ODEs & Lin Alg).
