Snapshots: Meet Emily Platt

Emily Platt, Senior Advisor, joined the Department of Mathematics in June 2021. She was named “Advisor of the Month” earlier this fall.

What was your previous job before you came to the Math Department? How long have you been at the U?

I’ve been at the U just over two years. I started as a chemistry advisor in August 2019. I began my advising career in mathematics at Utah Valley University. I’ve also been a math instructor for beginning and intermediate algebra courses at various institutions over the last 20 years.

What are your duties?

As a Senior Advisor in mathematics, I work with students in their academic planning as math majors. I also work with some of our student groups, including the Undergraduate Student Advisory Committee (USAC). I'm also part of the curriculum and scholarship committees.

What are the top three areas of concern that students want to discuss?

Top concerns for students are creating an academic plan that will help them graduate in a timely manner, navigating difficult classes, and finding career paths following graduation.

Emily PlattHours and/or days when you can meet with students?

I’m available to meet with students virtually or in-person Monday through Friday.

Any advice for students on how to best prepare for a meeting with you?

It's always beneficial if students come prepared with goals for the advising appointment and have an idea of what they want to accomplish. Coming with questions and concerns will help guide the meeting and ensure that it's productive and fulfills their objectives for the meeting.

What do you enjoy most about working with students?

Making connections with students and watching them overcome challenges and difficulties to achieve and fulfill their academic goals is the most rewarding experience as an advisor.

Emily Platt

What was your undergraduate degree?

I graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry in 1999. I also received a Graduate Math Certificate from Utah Valley University in 2020 and will complete a Master of Science in Math Education in 2022.
