TEXT: Larson and Hostetler, Intermediate algebra, 4th ed., Houghton Mifflin, 2005.
The essence of algebra is to use variables instead of just numbers. This enables us to describe things in general and helps us set up and solve word problems. Since this class is a prerequisite for most classes you'll be taking, it is very important that you understand and learn the material well. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you don't understand something. We will cover Chapters 1 through 8 of the text. The topics include: linear equations and their graphs, systems of linear equations, functions, polynomials and rational functions, radicals and complex numbers, quadratic equation.
If you need help or have any questions, please ask them in class, e-mail me, schedule appointment, or go to the tutoring center. You may schedule office hours in class, by phone or e-mail.

You do not need a calculator for this course, and calculators will not be permitted during exams.
