MATH 3210 § 1 NINTH HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT  Due Friday,
A. Treibergs    October 31, 2008.

A. Please hand in the following problems from Taylor's Foundations of Analysis.
  • 58[ 1, 2, 3¤, 11 ],
  • 70[ 4, 8, 10, 11 ].
(¤) You may assume that the collection of open intervals is countable: there are numbers ai < bi such that

      I = [a,b] ⊂ ∪i=1 (ai,bi).

It is possible to to reduce the question to this case by replacing each of the intervals of the collection with increasing unions of intervals with rational endpoints. Then by throwing out repetitions you end up with a countable collection.
