Math 5320 Homework

The homework problems assigned below are to be handed in on the due date.  They represent a minimum amount needed to understand the course.
You are encouraged to look at all the exercises in the book and work on as many as you can.  I would be glad to discuss any exercises that you choose to work on.  

Homework 1, due January 15:
Chapter 11: 1.1, 1.3, 1.8, 3.3, 3.8.
If you know enough topology, you may want to look at 1.4 and 1.5.   These are not to be handed in, but will be discussed in class.

Homework 2, due January 22:
Chapter 11: 3.12-3.13 (one problem), 4.3 (do any 3), 4.4, 5.1, 6.2.

Homework 3, due January 29:
Chapter 11: 6.8, 7.1, 7.3, 8.2, 8.3.

Homework 4, due February 5:
Chapter 12: 1.2, 2.1, 2.6, 2.8, 3.1.
For 2.6(a) the picture of the Hexagonal Lattice may be helpful.

Midterm February 12 on Chapters 11 and 12.
You could look a the following problems, not to be handed in:
Chaper 12: 3.2, 4.3, 4.7, 5.1, 5.3, 5.7.

Homework 5, due February 19:
Chapter 13: 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4.

Homework 6, due MONDAY MARCH 3:
Chapter 13: 9.3; Chapter 14: 1.1, 1.4, 2.2, 2.4.

Homework 7, due Wednesday March 19:
Chapter 14: 4.3, 4.6, 7.4, 7.5, 8.3.

Homework 8, due Wednesday March 26:
Chapter 15: 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4.

Midterm April 2 on Chapters 13 (Secs 1 to 3), 14 and 15 (Sections 1 to 4).
Emphasis on Chapter 14 and 15. You may of course need material from chapters 11 and 12.
The following problems should be helpful. Not to be handed in, but feel free to ask questions in class.
Chapter 15: 2.2, 3.2, 3.6, 4.1, 4.2.

Homework 9, due April 9:
Chapter 15: 6.1, 6.2, 7.2, 7.3, 7.11.
Hint for 7.11: Try multiplying f by a constant and f ' by a linear factor, add.

Homework 10, due April 16:
Chapter 15: 7.4, 7.8.
Chapter 16: 1.1, 2.2, 3.2.

Review Problems, to be discussed April 23:
Chapter 16: 6.1, 6.2, 7.2, 7.4, 7.9, 9.3.
