Text:

Calculus - 9th Edition, by Varberg, Purcell, and Rigdon.

Grading:

There will be 13 quizes of about 20 minutes, each worth 50 points,
and a two hour final exam. I will drop the lowest 2 of your quiz
scores. The remaining quizes will determine 60% of your grade. The final will determine
40% of your grade. I give makeup quizes only for quizes missed due to illness, injury
or official university obligations. Otherwise, if you miss a quiz it will be one of the
scores dropped.

Each quiz will be on the material covered during the previous three class
meetings. It will not include any material covered the same day as the quiz.

To get a good grade:

There is a simple strategy for doing well in this course: Before each class
meeting, read the section to be discussed in that meeting and do the homework
problems assigned for that section. Then come to class prepared to ask
questions about that section and those problems. This will prepare you to do
well on the quizes, since the quiz problems will be just like homework problems
and often will be taken directly from the homework.

Polynomial Calculus notes:

The first five lectures and problem sets will be from a set of notes on
Polynomial Calculus. These are available at Kinko's or may be downloaded from
the course web page by clicking on:

Introduction to Polynomial Calculus (pdf file)

After we finish these notes we will begin working through the sections of the
textbook. Chapter 0 consists of material you should already know, so we will
begin with Chapter 1.

Trigonometry:

Trigonometry is a prerequisite for this course. We will begin using it
in chapter 2. We will do a brief review of Trigonometry in section 2.3 but
this is no substitute for having passed a Trigonometry course.

Lectures, Assignments, and Quizes:

The following schedule is tentative. I may modify it as we go along.
Note that quizes are always on Wednesdays.
