MATH1090.004 College Algebra for Business and Social Sciences
Instructor: Laura Strube
Course Description:
In this course we will cover the following topics: functions and graphs, linear and quadratic functions, matrices, Gaussian elimination, exponential and logarithmic functions, growth, periodic and continuously compounded interest, arithmetic and geometric series, annuities and loans.
Tuesday 19 March 2013 - This is a reminder that the chapter 3.6 homework problems have been REMOVED from homework Homework 09. I will reassign these problems in Homework assignment 10.
Also, Midterm #2 will be Friday 22 March 2013 and will cover sections 2.5 - 3.5. I strongly suggest that you study the homework and quiz solutions posted online for this material.
Finally, I have extended the deadline of the Extra Credit 02 Homework assignment. It is now due on Wednesday 27 March 2013 along with Homework 10.
Tuesday 29 January 2013 - Homework problems 4c, 4f, 5g, 5i & 6 have been eliminated from Homework 03 part B. The graphs are harder than I intended given the large y-intercepts. You do not have to work these problems.
Friday 11 January 2013 -- Since our class is later in the morning, class will not be cancelled unless there is a university wide class cancellation. That said, please don't be heroic trying to get here.
If you're commuting from an area with dangerous road conditions please stay home. We will be covering section 1.1 and part of section 1.2 today. These sections are a fairly straightforward read in the textbook so you should be fine if you decide to stay home, study the text and work the homework on your own.
You should plan on working through the homework over the weekend so that you do not get behind and are prepared to ask questions on Monday.
Friday 11 January 2013 -- The Factoring Handout is now posted on the course webpage. Additional resources for Homework 01 are posted on the Homework Assignments page.
Wednesday, 9 January 2013 - Homework Clarification: There seems to be some confusion as to what should be turned in with the first assignment.
Today I gave you two problem packets. One was pages photocopied from your textbook - this was to help those of you who are having trouble purchasing the E-book. The second packet was the actual assignment. Homework 01 does not contain any optional problems - you should work every listed problem and turn them in on Wednesday 16 January. The Review assignment may be worked on the photocopy or written on your own paper. The chapter 1.1 and chapter 1.2 problems should be written on your own paper.
In the future, all optional review problems will be posted on the website but will not be included on the homework handout. Thus every problem listed on the handouts should be turned in.

Tuesday, 8 January 2013 - I have reserved LCB 323 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm on Tuesday afternoons. This time will be used as an informal problem session where you all can ask each other and myself questions about the homework or any concepts from class that are confusing you. The problem sessions will begin on Tuesday 15 January and will continue every Tuesday for as long as there is student interest.
Monday, 7 January 2013 - Welcome to MATH1090! This webpage will be updated throughout the semester with your homework assignments, homework solutions, class handouts and various other useful documents.
