Undergraduate Colloquium
For those of you who may not have heard, the math department has a colloquium each week for undergraduate students. Each week a guest speaker presents a talk on some mathematical topic and FREE Pizza is served.
Here are the details for the next colloquium:

Erika Meucci will present "Classification of Conics"
Abstract: Conics are obtained by intersecting a cone with a plane. There are
three types of conics: the hyperbola, the parabola, and the ellipse. They
were named by Apollonius of Perga (200 BC) and they have been studied by
Ancient Greek mathematicians. In this talk I will present the classification
of conics and some of their features.

Announcements:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 September 2011 - This webpage: http://www.math.utah.edu/ugrad/lab.html - gives a schedule of times when tutors with certain areas of expertise are available in the tutoring center computer lab (LCB 155c). This may be of use to you as you begin working on your first computational assignment.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13 September 2011 - On Friday, 23 September I will be holding my office hours (12:55 - 1:45pm) in the LCB 115 computer lab. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about you computational assignment.
Note: Because I myself have class immediately following my office hours the end time for this session will be firm. I HIGHLY recommend working on your project for several hours before coming to this session. An hour flies by when you're working on a computational assignment; in order for you to get the most out of this session you need to come "armed" with questions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 September 2011 - For those of you interested in using MATLAB instead of Maple for your computer assignments, I will be holding an "intro to MATLAB" session on Wednesday from 11:50 - 12:40 in LCB 115.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 September 2011 - In lieu of office hours this week I will be holding a 2 HOUR exam review session on Friday 16 September. This session will run from 11:45 - 1:45 pm and will be in our "normal" classroom JWB 335.
I have not completely decided on the session structure yet, but likely the first hour will cover the class material that we have not yet covered in our sessions and the second hour will be a more general exam review.
Please come prepared with questions and problems you need help on. I would HIGHLY recommend practicing lots of word problems above and beyond what Robbie has assigned. This type of problem can be tricky to get used to and the more you practice the more "second nature" they will become.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11 September 2011 - If any of you all would prefer to complete your computer assignments using MATLAB (instead of Maple), you may find the following tutorials helpful:
http://www.math.utah.edu/~camacho/teaching/fall2011/files/Matlab_Intro.pdf
http://www.math.utah.edu/~camacho/teaching/fall2011/files/Matlab_Intro.pdf
In addition, the MATLAB version of your current assignment may be found here:
http://www.math.utah.edu/~camacho/teaching/fall2011/files/Project_2_Matlab.pdf
Finally, keep checking my web page. We are attempting to arrange a couple "intro to MATLAB" sessions this week, however this will be the only week they are offered and they will probably only be offered once or twice so if you're interested be keep your eyes open for times!.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9 September 2011 - I have chosen my Tutoring Center Hours! If you would like help with your homework I will be in the tutoring center on Tuesdays from 11:00am - 12:00pm.
ALSO, Nik Aksamit runs the Lab sections for Dr. Korevaar's MATH2250 class and will be in the Tutoring Center from 11:00am -12:00pm on Wednesdays. Although Dr. Korevaar doesn't necessarily assign the same problems as Robbie, the problems are very similar and so Nik should be a good resource (during his Tutoring Center hour) if you need help.
Finally, as a quick reminder if you want to print off the Maple intro documents they can be found at: http://www.math.utah.edu/~korevaar/2250fall11/2250hw.html
-------------------------------------------------------------
6 September 2011 - A few more Maple Introduction Sessions have been scheduled for this week. If you haven't yet attended one, now is your chance!
Tuesday, 6 Sept. 9:40-10:30 CANCELLED DUE TO ACCIDENTAL SCHEDULING CONFLICT
Tuesday, 6 Sept. 3-3:50
Wednesday, 7 Sept 9:40-10:30
Wednesday, 7 Sept 3-3:50
Thursday, 8 Sept 11:50-12:40
Each of these sessions will be held in the LCB computer Lab (Room 115).
---------------------------------------------------------------
21 August 2011 - Section 007 (Mondays) Students:
As the Monday lab section will not be meeting next week due to Labor Day, I have reserved Room 152 in the Tutoring Center for Tuesday Sept 6 from 3:35pm - 4:55pm.
My plan is to go over the material I would have covered in the lab section as well as to be available for any homework questions you have.
Alternatively, if you are unable to come on Tuesday and would like to attend Wednesdays Lab section you are more than welcome.
Have a wonderful holiday and I'll see ya'll next week!
------------------------------------------------------------------
6 August 2011 - The due date for your first assignment has been pushed back to Thursday 1 Sept 2011. Also, future homework assignments will be assigned on Thursdays and due the following Thursday.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
26 August 2011 - We will be holding Maple Introduction sections next week in LCB 115 at the following times:
Monday, 29 August, 3:00-3:50 pm
Tuesday, 30 August 11:50am - 12:40pm
Wednesday, 31 August 9:40 - 10:30 am AND 2:00-2:50pm
Friday, 2 September 10:45 - 11:35 am AND 3:00-3:50pm
---------------------------------------------------------------------
22 August 2011 - Lab Sections 007 (Mondays 12:55 - 13:45) and 008 (Wednesdays 12:55-13:45) will not be meeting the first week of class. These lab sections will begin the week of August 29th. Important: This announcement applies to these sections only.
