Text: Abstract Algebra, Third edition by I. N. Herstein

Prerequisites: Math 2250 or 2270 and Math 3210 or the equivalent.


Course Description This course is an introduction to the main topics of abstract Algebra. We will study the main properties of groups, rings, and fields and their connections with other branches of mathematics. Math 5310 will cover roughly the first half of the text, and the other half will be the subject of Math 5320.

Grading: There will be weekly homework asignments, two in-class midterms, and a comprehensive final exam. The homework will count for 30% of your grade, the midterms for 40%, and the final exam for 30%. The lowest two homework grades will be dropped.
