*************** ANNOUNCEMENT ********************** * University of Utah Mathematical Biology Seminar * *************************************************** Wednesday, February 24 at 4pm in INSCC 110 Speaker: Markus Owen, U of U Math Title: The Mechanics of Lung Tissue under High Frequency Ventilation Abstract: High frequency lung ventilation has been shown to benefit patients with severe respiratory distress, but may also induce lung damage, and a clear protocol for the most effective treatment has not been identified. We use a homogenisation theory approach to derive equations for the macroscopic behaviour of lung tissue based upon the microstructure of respiratory regions. This, in combination with larger scale numerical simulations, forms the first step towards a predictive model to aid clinical decision making.
