Abstract: Fish melanophore cells demonstate a self-organizing behaviour that depends on the same type of protein structures that seem to be at work in the centering of chromosomes during mitosis. The microtubule network and the molecular motor dynein both play a significant role. I will discuss experiments that reveal some unexpected dynamics as well as a mathematical model that describes the system. Some simulations and a prelude to an asymptotic solution will wrap things up.
