In this class we will recall basic geometry and trigonometry, and learn some things not covered in the high school version of these courses. We will do geometric proofs, and also learn ruler-and-compass constructions.
The format of class will be a sort of lecture coupled with discussion. Homework will be assigned frequently, but not collected. The class grade will be based on weekly quizzes and exams. To make sure you are ready for the quizzes, do the homework, and either ask questions in class or office hours, or check your work against the solution manual. Since I am not grading your homework, there should be less temptation simply to copy answers over from the solutions manual.
Quizzes will be 15-20 minutes and take place on Fridays (unless there is an exam) starting January 11. I will drop your lowest two quiz grades. There will be three exams during the semester (Feb. 1, Feb. 29, Mar. 28); if all of your quiz scores are higher than your lowest exam score, I will give the average of your two lowest quiz scores as your grade for your lowest midterm. The comprehensive final exam is April 28, 1:00-3:00.
Grading will be 30% quizzes, 40% midterm exams, and 30% final exam. I intend to use a "straight" grading scale where 90-100 is A or A-, 80-90 is B+, B, or B-, etc. Since I am dropping low scores, I will not allow makeups on quizzes. If there is an inescapable reason you cannot make it to a midterm, the deadline for letting me know is a week in advance, and the midterm must be taken in advance, not later.
