Lab Information

Everyone in the class needs an account on the math department computer systems. If you were registered at the beginning of the semester, then you will definitely have an account. You may have an account for another class as well, if you are taking multiple math courses.

To check if your account is active, you need to use a math department computer (these can be found, for example, in LCB 115 or on the fourth floor of LCB; they say Sun microsystmes on the side, and are very thin). Your username works as follows: all usernames start with c-. After this comes your last initial, last letter of last name, first initial, then middle initial, and possible a number. Here's an example: my name is Michael Alan van Opstall. So my username is c-vlma. Since there may be more than one person with the same set of initials, the accounts created later may have a number after them. So my account may be c-vlma1 or c-vlma2, for example. Your password is the four letters from your username (in my example, vlma) followed by the last four digits of your University ID number. So maybe my password is vlma1234.

Sometime before the first lab, find a math department computer and figure out your username and password. I'm sorry that you may have to try a few times, but that's how the department creates thousands of accounts at once. If you've tried your password with five different usernames, and had no luck, email me, and I will get an account created for you. You must use these on math department Sun computers to get access. If you know what it means, you can also ssh to xserver.math.utah.edu and try your password, if you don't want to go to a lab.

You might want to try some basic things before lab. We will go through some of this during the lab time, but the sooner you know it, the sooner you can begin. On the bottom of your screen there will be a row of icons. The leftmost icon looks like a computer, and clicking it gives you a window where you can enter commands. A command you need to use right away is passwd. Use this to change your password from the one generated for you automatically.

The icon on the bottom of the screen that looks like a maple leaf is for Maple. Click it to start Maple.

Finally, to log out, there is a small button just to the right of the middle of the icon bar on the bottom of the screen marked "EXIT". Click this when you are done to log out. We will go through some of this during the lab time, so don't panic if you have problems. If you don't seem to have an account, please let me know.

Here are the lab assignments. To open them in Maple, choose "Open URL..." from the File menu and type in the file names below.
