Course description

This course aims to develop familiarity with basic algebraic notation, manipulation, and application to problems. Specifically, it will deal with linear equations and inequalities, polynomial expressions, and exponential and logarithmic expressions.

Course policies

Homework will be assigned from the odd-numbered exercises in the book. The answers can be found in the back, and a complete solutions manual is available. Homework will not be collected and graded. Instead, every other week there will be an in-class quiz, and every other week a take-home quiz will be assigned. The take-home quiz must be completed on the paper provided and turned in at the beginning of class. Late quizzes are not accepted. Calculators are not allowed on quizzes and exams. The final exam is common to both sections of Math 1010. Missed work may not be made up except in case of sickness (with a note from a doctor) or emergency (this does not include having to work). In these cases, missed exams may be made up in the testing center, which charges $5 to proctor. The make-up exams may be more difficult than the original. Missed quizzes may not be made up under any circumstances.

Attendance every day is in your best interest. I will be working out problems very similar to those on homeworks, quizzes, and exams, for your benefit. I will not be taking attendance, on the other hand. While in class, your cell phones must be silenced. If you are going to read other material, text message, or listen to your MP3 player, please do it somewhere else, rather than in my class.

Grading

Quizzes are worth 30% of the grade. I will drop the two lowest scores. Midterm exams are worth 20% each. The final exam is worth 30%. The grading scale will be a straight scale. Grades lower than 60% will not receive a passing grade. A minimum of 72% is required for a C, which is required to advance to the next course in the sequence.

Tutoring

Tutoring is offered by the mathematics department for free in the Math Center, located in the basement between buildings JWB and LCB. The hours are 8-8 M-Th, and 8-5 on Friday.

ADA Statement

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires reasonable accomodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic, learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accomodations for this course.
