Math 677-1 (three credit hour)
Title: Mathematical Biology (Ecology and Evolution)
Instructor: Mark Lewis
Description: Math 677 is the first quarter of two quarter
sequence on Ecology and Evolution. The sequence is for students
with some math background who are interested in the interplay
between science and mathematics in ecology and evolution theory.
Ecology is accented more in 677 and evolution in 678.
Subjects Covered:
Single population models,
Biological invasions: methods of control, species interactions and
asymptotic spread rates using nonlinear PDE and integro-difference
formulations.
Stochastic spatial models: analytical approximations involving moments
and pair approximations, lattice and continuous-space models.
Spatial patterning: spatial patterns arising from territoriality,
competition, predator-prey interactions and plant-herbivore interactions.
Age structure and population growth (if time permits).
