The Krichever-Novikov algebras as universal intertwiners

Abstract: A conformal field theory in the sense of Segal includes both a skew-hermitian representation of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of the circle and a trace-class representation of a semigroup of Riemann surfaces with two boundary components. The Krichever-Novikov algebras intertwine these two structures, and also suggest the appropriate direction for the supersymmetric generalization.for conformal field theory.
