Syllabus
We will follow
Varberg/Purcell/Rigdon:
Calculus, 9th edition, chapters 6 to 10.
Prerequisites
A grade of C or better in Math 1210 (Calculus I).
Problem sessions
I plan to lecture on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, and work out problems
together on Wednesday. The problems covered will be instructive in
nature, and will attempt to encompass the concepts covered in lecture.
Quizzes
There will be a weekly quiz every Friday (except holidays and weeks in
which there is an exam), at the end of the lecture, ten minutes
long-closed book, and no calculators! The aim of the quiz is to give you
an idea on where you stand as the course progresses. The material
tested in quizzes is a good indicator of the nature of problems that
will be on the exams. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped, therefore
there will be no make up quizzes under any
circumstance.
Homeworks
Homework will be assigned weekly (every Friday) and will be due the
following Friday, at the beginning of class. The assignments will be posted
online
(see bottom of the page). Feel free
to work in groups, however, in the end you ought to write up your own
solutions. When submitting a homework, follow these
guidelines!
No late homework will be accepted.
Lowest homework score will also be dropped. From each homework set, only
three problems will be graded. Each problem is graded out of 3 points:
3-very good, 2-some little mistake, 1-some work toward a solution,
0-forget about it.
Exam Schedule (Tentative)
- Exam 1: Friday, February 20, 2009 (Solutions: [pdf])
- Exam 2: Friday, April 3, 2009 (Solutions: [pdf])
- Final Exam: Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 1.00-3.00 p.m., same room as the
lecture (Solutions: [pdf])
All exams are closed-book. No calculators are allowed. The final exam is comprehensive.
Make-up Policy
I follow the department's policy to not offer make-up exams unless there
is a strong excuse (life circumstances that are impossible to avoid) for
missing the exam. In other cases, please feel free to contact me in
advance.
Help
If you made it without a problem to Calculus II, then with work (amount of
which may vary from one student to another depending on the background)
everyone can get a satisfactory score. My advice is the following:
- Come to class if you can, and try to understand as much as you can.
One way of making the class more accessible is to come prepared. Read the
section in advance to get some idea of what is going to be covered. If
you can't follow, it is not the end of the world.
- Make sure that you dedicate every evening, at least one (serious) hour
to
reading the notes together with the book, going over/doing examples
covered in class and on the book, and understanding them. (Important: The
notes must be mastered.) Then close the notes and the book and attempt
only those homework problems that pertain to the section studied. If
there are problems, reiterate the process. If you find it hard, don't get
discouraged as you are not alone.
- If there are still gaps, come to my office hours and ask questions.
If
you need more help than the office hour can give you, do not be
discouraged to ask me for other times. I may be busy, but will try my
best to find time for you; the worst that can happen is that I will ask
you to come at another time. Also, don't leave getting help for the last
moment.
- Additionally, you can get help from a Tutor (free of charge) at the Math Center, located on the first floor between the two Math buildings
(JWB and LCB). The hours are Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-6pm.
Grade
Your final score will consist in a weighted average of your score
in the quizzes (10%), homeworks (20%), exams (20% each), and final
(30%).
You can track your scores on
WebCT/Blackboard.
Disability
Students with documented disabilities or other special needs that require special accomodation
must register with the Center for Disability Services. After that, contact the instructor at least a week before each exam; we will need to have received confirmation from the Center for Disability Services.
