Syllabus
The course will focus on two topics: differentiation and integration. We shall start with polynomial calculus and for this part, we shall follow these notes. For differentiation and integration, we will follow Varberg/Purcell/Rigdon: Calculus, 9th edition, chapters 0 to 5.
A detailed description of the sections covered is listed below:
Detailed Course Description
Prerequisites
Must master the material covered in Math 1050 and Math 1060.
Problem sessions
I plan to lecture on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, and work out problems
together on Wednesday. The problems covered will be instructive in nature,
and will attempt to encompass the concepts covered in lecture.
Quizzes
There will be a weekly quiz every Friday (except holidays and weeks in which there is an exam), at the end of the lecture, ten minutes long -- closed-book and no calculators! The aim of the quiz is to give you an idea on where you stand as the course progresses. The material tested in quizzes is a good indicator of the nature of problems that will be on the exam. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped, therefore there will be no make up quizzes under any circumstance.
Homeworks
Homework will be assigned every Friday evening and will be due the following Friday, at the beginning of class. The assignments will be posted online (see detailed course description). You are encouraged to work in groups, however, in the end you ought to write the solutions individually. When submitting a homework, please follow these guidelines! No late homework will be accepted! Lowest homework score will be dropped. From each homework set, only three problems will be graded. Each problem is graded out of 3 points: 3-very good, 2-some little mistake, 1-some work towards a solution, 0-forget about it.
Exams
Exams, just like quizzes, are closed-book and with no calculators allowed.
Exam 1 and 2 will cover material that has been covered in the respective time intervals, that is, from the beginning of the semester till exam 1, and from exam 1 to exam 2, while the final exam is comprehensive.
- Exam 1: Friday, Oct. 10, same time and place as the usual course
- Exam 2: Friday, Nov. 21, same time and place as the usual course
- Final Exam: Thursday, Dec. 18, 10:30am - 12:30pm,
same place as the usual lecture
Make-up Policy
I follow the department's policy to not offer make-up exams unless there is a strong excuse (life circumstances that are impossible to avoid) for missing the exam. In other cases, please feel free to contact me in advance.
Some notes
Even though this is a Calculus course, I believe that with work everyone can get a satisfactory score. My advice is the following:
- Come to class if you can, and try to understand as much as you can. If you can't follow, it is not the end of the world.
- Make sure that you dedicate, every evening, at least one (serious) hour to reading the class notes together with the book, doing examples covered in class and on the book, and understanding them. Then close the notes and the book and attempt only those homework problems that pertain to the section studied. If there are problems, reiterate the process. Very important, don't get discouraged. Math requires a lot of work for everyone and you are not alone in the battle of understanding.
- If there are still gaps, come to my office hours and ask questions. If you need more help, do not be discouraged to ask me for other times. I may be busy, but will try to do my best to dedicate some time for you.
- Also, you can get help from a tutor (free of charge) at the Math Center, located on the first floor between the two Math buildings (JWB and LCB). The hours are Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-6pm.
Final Grade
Your final grade will be composed of a weighted average of your score in the quizzes (10%), homeworks (30%), exams (15% each), and final (30%). You can track your scores on WebCT/Blackboard.
Disability
Students with documented disabilities or other special needs that require special accomodation must register with the Center for Disability Services. After that, contact me at least a week before each exam; we will need to have received confirmation from the Center for Disability Services.
