Math 2270-3 Maple Project #2

Applications of Orthogonality

This Maple project is due Friday November 13. You may work together with one other person if you wish. In that case the two of you will hand in one project report for each part, with both of your names.

In the first part of the project you will review the way in which power laws between related data sets can be deduced in case there is a good linear regression line for the log-log data. The Maple version of the class notes from this past Friday October 30 explain this.

After you understand the mathematics in that worksheet, I have a collection of height-weight data which students in the Utah ACCESS class put together from friends and family this summer. You will be looking for a power law relating weights to heights, for this data. Detailed questions for you to answer are in "2270proj2a.mw".

A decade ago I found some national height-weight data from the 1976-1980. It's discussed in the file "2270ntlbmi.pdf." You will use this file as part of part A.

In the second part of this project you will explore two natural inner products for function vector spaces. The explanations you need are in "2270innerprods.mw", and the problems you are to work are in "2270proj2b.mw".
