Announcements:
(5/5) The grades and solutions to the final exam are posted! I know you all worked very hard this semester, and I truly appreciate the effort you put into my class. I hope you found the class challenging, but rewarding. Great job everyone, and congratulations to all the graduating seniors.
(5/1) The problems which were graded from Homeworks 7 and 8 are:
Section 5.1 # 1,19,27
Section 5.2 # 7,13
Section 5.3 # 1,5,7
Section 5.5 # 9,15,21
Section 6.1 # 3,9,17
Section 6.2 # 5,9,21
Section 6.3 # 3,7
(4/28) The final exam is next Monday, 5/4/09 6-8 pm. We will continue our review in class tomorrow. My office hour will be moved to the hour before class. If you need extra help reviewing, please email me with questions and/or to set up a time to meet.
(4/15) It was brought to my attention today that there is some soft-cover version of our book some students are using which does not contain the Chapter 6 we are covering on probability. I have posted the homework/review problems and solutions given in the book for this chapter.
(3/22) Julian will hold an office hour the hour before the exam on Wednesday. You should talk to him about any concerns between 5-6 pm in his office JWB 221.
(3/16) Your substitutes next week are Ben Trahan (trahan@math.utah.edu) on Monday, and Julian Chan (julian@math.utah.edu) on Wednesday. Ben will hold the usual Monday office hour 5-6 pm, and it will be held in our usual classroom LCB 121 instead of an office. Please feel free to email either of them or me with any questions you have leading up to the exam.
(3/16) There was sufficient response from the class to merit covering chapter 6 in lieu of chapter 8, so the semester will proceed as scheduled in the syllabus.
(3/4) There was a slight change to homework #5 as of tonight: Problems #46 and 47 of Section 3.7 are no longer assigned, but I have added problem #18 of that section.
(3/4) The Wednesday office hour (7:30-8:30 pm) will be held in our classroom (LCB 121). Also, if no one is at office hour by 8 pm, I will reserve the right to leave for the night.
(3/3) In response to the online course evaluation, I am making the following course modifications:
**There is now a *second* office hour, held immediately after class (7:30-8:30) on Wednesdays. The Monday 5-6 pm office hour is still in effect, as well as the Tutoring center hour Thursdays 1-2 pm. Additionally, you should feel free to email me questions at any time, and if you need help in person but can't meet me at any of the pre-arranged times, contact me to set up a meeting.
**I am relaxing the due date on homeworks -- homework is now due precicely by 8 am Tuesday mornings.
**You will be allowed to drop one homework assignment.
**I will start posting solutions to the graded problems shortly after they are due -- possibly upwards of a week after.
(3/3) You can earn more points on the bonus question by turning in a solution with your homework on 3/9.
(3/3) The average on Exam I was 89.42% -- Great job everyone!
(2/15) Exam I is Wednesday 2/25. In class Wednesday 2/18 I will provide review materials: a list of review problems from the book and solutions to them. Also, since Homework #4 is due Monday 2/23, you won't have the graded assignment back before the exam. Consequently, I will provide solutions to Homework #4 when you turn the assignment in.
(2/15) To make up for not having an office hour Monday 2/16 due to school being closed for the holiday, there will be an office hour Wednesday 2/18 from 5-6 pm.
(1/29) Starting Feb. 9, I will be in the tutoring center every Thursday from 1-2 pm.
(1/29) I have just arranged an online midterm evaluation. It can be accessed at the website continue.utah.edu/evals from Feb. 12 to Feb. 19. The evaluation is short (4 questions), voluntary, and anonymous. In a continued effort to improve this new course, I would deeply appreciate any constructive feedback.
