Abstract:

We propose a new model for electrical activity of cardiac tissue that incorporates the effects of cellular microstructure. As such, this model provides insight into the mechanism of direct stimulation and defibrillation of cardiac tissue following injection of large currents. To illustrate the usefulness of the model, numerical simulations are used to show the difference between successful and unsuccessful defibrillation of large pieces of tissue.
