Text: Brief Calculus, Seventh edition, by Larson and Edwards
Prerequisite: At least a C in Math 1050 or Math 1090. Students should also have a good foundation in college algebra.
Course Description: This course is meant to be a brief introduction to calculus. We will first study functions, limits and continuity. We will then move on to derivatives and applications of derivatives. Next will be exponential and logarithmic functions, integration techniques, applications of integration, and functions of two or more variables. The chapters that these topics correspond to are chapter 1.4-1.6, all of chapter 2, all of chapter 3, chapter 4.1-4.5, all of chapter 5, all of chapter 6, and sections 1, 3, and 4 in chapter 7. Additional topics maybe covered.
Tutoring Lab: T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center (adjacent to JWB & LCB), room 155.
Calculators: You may not use a calculator on the exams!!! They will be written so that you do not need a calculator.
Grading: The grades will be calculated as follows:
Weekly Homework 25%
Exam I 15%
Exam II 15%
Exam III 15%
Final Exam 30%
(Note: There will be 3 exams. Your lowest midterm exams will be averaged. This average over all 3 exams will replace your lowest exam grade and will count toward your final grade.)
Exam Days:
Midterm I- September 15th
Midterm II- October 16th
Midterm III- November 13th
Final Exam- December 13th 10:30-12:30
Note: A make-up exam will only be given in EXTREME cases!!! Telling me you have to work that night or that traffic is bad is not a good excuse. A good reason to miss an exam is a car accident, death in the family, or surgery. If you let me know well in advance that you cannot make an exam we might be able to work something out so please talk to me in advance about these situations. Also note that I reserve the right to make any changes to the syllabus. An example of such a change could be grading scheme. If such a change occurs before the semester ends I will notify students in class, through e-mail, or on my webpage.
Homework: Homework will be due every Friday. It will be announced in class or on my webpage what sections of your homework will be due on each Friday. Students are responsible for coming to class everyday so that they know what homework is due. You should take the homework assignments very seriously as it is worth 25% of your grade which is more than an exam, and just a little less than what the final is worth. I recommend paying close attention to your homework scores and to try to get full credit on all of your homework. Your lowest three homework scores will be dropped and will not be applied towards your final grade. No late homework will be accepted. If you turn in your homework late it will not be graded and you will receive a zero grade for that homework. If a student receives a zero as their homework score because of late homework they can apply this towards the homework score that they drop. Homework is due in class by the end of the class period. A certain percentage of the homework score will be based on completion and and the remaining percentage will be based on a selection of graded homework problems.
ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systematic, learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accommodations you may require for the course.
