Students will need to check the web page and e-mail on a daily basis for various reasons such as course announcements and assignments. As such students are responsible for making sure that the e-mail address listed with the university is up to date and that students are able to receive and read messages daily. Failure to do so may prevent you from receiving important information of which you will be accountable.

Text: Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, Volume 1, by Harshbarger & Reynolds (custom edition for the U of U).

Prerequisite: Math ACT score of 23 or grade of C or better in MATH 1010. Students should also have a strong foundation in college algebra.

Course Description:

Tennatively we will cover the following chapters:

Chapter 0: A review of algebra

Chapter 1: Functions, solutions of systems of linear equations, applications to business, and economics.

Chapter 2: More about functions (in particular quadratic functions), and more applications to business.

Chapter 3: Matricies, solution sets to linear equations.

Chapter 4: Inequalities and linear programming.

Chapter 5: Expondential and logarithmic functions.

Chapter 6: Mathematics of finance, annunities, loans, inerest, ....

Calculators: You may use a calculator for this course.

Grading: The grades will be calculated as follows:

Quizzes 20%

Homework 20%

Exam I 15%

Exam II 15%

Final Exam 30%

Exam Days:

Exam I- Febuary 22^nd 2008.

Exam II- April 4^th 2008.

Final Exam- Monday, April 28 3:30-5:30 P.M..

Note: A make-up exam or quiz will only be given in EXTREME cases!!! Telling me you have to work that night or that traffic is bad is not a good excuse. A good reason to miss an exam is a car accident, death in the family, surgery. If you let me know well in advance that you cannot make an exam or quiz we might be able to work something out so please talk to me in advance about these situations. In general you should take the syllabus as a general outline for the structure of the course and should note that it maybe subject to change.

Homework and Quizzes: Homework and quizzes will be announced on my web page or in class. It is the students responsibility to check the class webpage for homework assignments and quizz dates. You should take the homework assignments very seriously as it is worth 20% of your grade which is more than an exam, and just a little less than what the final is worth. Your written solutions should contain enough explanation so that one of your classmates would be able to easily understand what you have done. Generally, it is inadequate to merely write down a final answer. The style of your written solutions should be very much like that of the examples from class and from the text book. You are encouraged to study and work together on homework assignments, but you must each submit your own work. Everything you submit should be in your own words and you should thoroughly understand everything you write down. If there is something that you don’t think you understand, please come talk with me. Your lowest homework and quiz score will be dropped and will not be applied towards your final grade. You must turn in your homework in class on the day which the assignment is due.

A note on the grading scale: I reserve the right to change the grading scale and grading policy.

Decorum: The purpose of this class is to allow me to assist you, the students, to learn math. It is not to allow anyone (including myself) to show off or to belittle or demean any other person. There is no competition for grades or favor, so such behavior will not be tolerated. If there are any comments, remarks, or suggestions that you have you can feel free to give them to me.
