Information about Test 1

• Reminder: There is a test on Wednesday, September 9. It will take the full 50 minutes and covers sections 1 - 6 of Chapter P. The basic outline of the test looks like:
  1. Simplify the following expressions:
     6 expressions

  2. Solve the following equations:
     7 equations

     (Note this means that you do not need to know how to complete the square for this test. For any quadratic equation you can either factor or use the quadratic formula.)

  3. Solve the following inequalities. Sketch your solution on the number line and express your answer in interval notation.
     3 inequalities

  You must show your work on this test and I want exact answers only. (For example, if the solution is 1 + sqrt(2), then you would lose some points for the decimal approximation 2.414.)

• Solutions to Test 1 are available in the Math Department Library, Room 121 of JWB. These are full solutions, with intermediate steps, not just the answers. You may check them out for 2 hours if you wish.

• Grading Scale for Test 1: Scores on the first test correspond (approximately) to letter grades as follows:

  90 - 100%	A	18
  85 - 89%	A-	7
  80 - 84%	B+	13
  75 - 79%	B	11
  70 - 74%	B-	11
  65 - 69%	C+	5
  60 - 64%	C	8
  55 - 59%	C-	10
  50 - 54%	D+	7
  45 - 49%	D	6
  40 - 44%	D-	7
  Less than 40%	E	28
