Information about Quiz 2

• Reminder: There is a quiz on Wednesday, September 23. If you do not drop this quiz, it will count for 6% of your grade for the course. The quiz will take 30 minutes and covers sections 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7. Because this quiz has a lot of graphing questions, CALCULATORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

  The important topics covered in these sections are:

  1. Determine whether a given function is even, odd, or neither

  2. shifting, stretching and reflecting basic graphs such as

     y = x2, y = square root of x , y = |x|

  3. sum, difference, product, quotient and composition of functions.

  4. Given a function f, find its inverse f^-1 if it exists. Verify algebraically by computing f composed with f^-1 and f^-1 composed with f.

  5. Problems with direct variation, inverse variation, and joint variation

• As usual, I want exact answers and you must show your supporting work.
• Solutions to Quiz 2 are available in the Math Department Library, Room 121 of JWB. These are full solutions, with intermediate steps, not just the answers. You may check them out for 2 hours if you wish.

• Grading Scale for Quiz 2: The scores on this quiz averaged to 53 percent, corresponding to a letter grade of D+. Therefore, the scores were curved a little bit. For example, if your score on the quiz was 20 out of 32 points, then I recorded a score of 22 points out of 32. To compute your score on the test:

   100*(total points earned + 2)/32 = your score as a percentage
  
   Example:
   If your test came back with the score of 25 points out of 32, 
   then your curved score is
   
         100*(25+2)/32 percent =  84 percent (rounded to nearest whole number)
  

  which is borderline B+/A-

  After curving, scores on the second quiz correspond (approximately) to letter grades as follows:

  90 - 100%	A	22
