Course Contents: We will cover an overview of polynomial calculus from notes and Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Varberg and Purcell. Familiarity with college algebra and trigonometry will be assumed. (See Chapter 1 of V & P for review.)

Maple: This section of Calculus I will include a computer component. We will have class in the Math Department's computer lab in Building 129 on Wednesdays, beginning September 2. In these lab classes we will use Maple, a general purpose mathematical software package. The computer assignments are to be completed in class, except perhaps for a brief write-up. These assignments will give an introduction to the basic features of Maple and reinforce the concepts we are working with in Varberg and Purcell. Computer assignments will count for a total of 10% of your grade and your lowest score will be dropped.

Homework: Homework will not be collected or graded. Of course, the tests will be based primarily on the homework assignments and the examples from the book and from class. On those Tuesdays when we do not have a test scheduled, we will have 10-15 minute quizzes based directly on assigned homework problems. These quizzes count for 10% of your grade for the course.

Tests: There will be five in-class tests which will count for 60% of your grade for the course.

There will be NO MAKEUP TESTS OR QUIZZES. Instead, you may DROP YOUR LOWEST TEST SCORE and your lowest two quizzes. Please note that the purpose of dropping scores is to provide reasonable accommodation in the event that you must miss a test due to illness, family difficulties, car trouble, a sister's wedding, etc. In the unlikely event that you have excellent reasons for missing more than one test, additional weight may be added to the final exam.

Cumulative Final Exam will be given Tuesday, December 15, 10AM - noon and counts for 20% of your grade.

Students are responsible for all material presented in class, including announcements about changes in course procedures.

ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accomodation be provided for students with physical, sensory, cognitive, systemic, learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Please contact me at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accomodations for this course.
