- Book: J. W. Brown and R. V. Churchill, Complex
Variables and Applications, sixth edition, McGraw Hill, New
York, NY 1996. This book is available from the bookstore.
- Topics: We will cover most of chapters 1 through 10 from
the textbook.
- Prerequisites: A good working knowledge of multivariable
calculus and elementary partial differential equations will be
essential for this course. A little knowledge of linear algebra is
also helpful.
- Tests and Exams:
- There will be three in-class 50 minute tests, that will be cumulative, but mostly focused on the material covered since the last test. Since the lowest of the three test scores will be dropped, there will be no makeups for these tests.
- Final (Cumulative) Exam: Friday, December 13, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, in OSH 131.
- Homework: Exercises will be assigned every day, but they
will not be graded. It will be your responsibility to ask
questions (in class and in my office) and be sure to be able to
solve the homework. You are encouraged to work through as many
exercises from the book as you can!
- Problem Session: There will be a (voluntary)
weekly problem session (day/hour to be scheduled in class) where
we will discuss anything you want, especially problems from the
homework.
- Grades: the final (number) grade will be computed as
follows:
from your final exam grade, and 
for each of
the best two test grades (that is, we drop the lowest test score).
If your final exam grade is higher than the number computed above,
then your total grade is your final grade.
- Tutoring Center:Open 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Monday through
Thursday and 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Fridays, in the Mathematics
Tutoring Center (between the JWB and LCB buildings). Please
check the schedule maintained at

- Calculators: the use of calculators in class and during
exams is allowed. Other electronic devices (laptop computers, etc)
are not allowed during exams. Notice that it may be requested that
certain exercises be solved without the use of
calculators.
