PC Installation of Windows Netscape Navigator 3 for Win95 This file contains information on WWW internet connection of a PC through the math dept ANNEX. This file last edited 5 Oct 1998. ================================NetScape============================== The latest free distribution of netscape can be downloaded from the site http://www.netscape.com/ using a standard browser like lynx or any version of netscape or internet explorer. Installation of the netscape package is completely automatic. It will work after installation, provided internet explorer already works. As a first start on getting networking to work, it suffices to get internet explorer to function. ================================Networking============================== To invoke networking under win95, begin with the START menu, then choose SETTINGS and CONTROL PANEL and finally NETWORK. On the NETWORK screen, choose ADD and arrange for CLIENTS and PROTOCOL additions until the main screen contains exactly these items: Client for Microsoft Networks Dialup Adaptor IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol TCP/IP The first is required in order to save passwords used for remote dialup. The third is used for possible direct cable connections under win95, a method to move software onto your machine, or to back up the hard disk to another win95 computer. The fourth item is for dialup PPP to an internet service provider, like annex.math.utah.edu. Most people will want a blank password to be recorded in win95. This allows public use of a win95 machine in a household and the simplest unattended boot process for win95. This password has nothing to do with a unix password at math.utah.edu. ============================Dial-Up Networking========================== The connection wizard in the Dial-Up Networking folder is started in order to make a connection icon to annex.math.utah.edu. Give it a name like UofU8105 to match the phone number 581-8105. Choose a modem like "Standard 28800 bps Modem", even if you have a 33.6 modem. If nothing like this is offered, then go back to the control panel, modems, and browse until you install it. The modem properties, offered under "Configure": General Select the COM port, and 115000 bps. Connection Select 8, None, 1, hardware flow. Options Don't check anything. Choose area code blank, phone number 5818105 or 5818861 and country code for the USA. Click on "Finish". Click on the newly created connection, and then on "Properties" under the file menu. You will see these possible screens: General Already set above. Server Types Check IPX/SPX and TCP/IP only. Under SETTINGS enter DNS 128.110.198.2 and 128.110.124.120. Check server assigned IP, IP header compression and default gateway. Scripting Browse for file Pppmenu, the open it, and edit it, changing only "3^M" to "ppp^M" (only one place to edit). Uncheck "Step through script" and check "Start minimized". Hint: If Scripting does not appear, then you have an old version of Win95. Upgrade your networking software from www.microsoft.com, getting the file MSISDN*.EXE, by searching for the string ISDN at this site. To start and test the connection, double-click the new entry just finished. It should log onto annex.math.utah.edu and establish a ppp connection, all without your intervention. After it works once, then click again on the connection, then on "Connections" in the dialup networking menu, then SETTINGS. Turn off everything, then set REDIAL and also "Don't prompt". Save it. Then logon to annex is automatic, by just double-click of the connection entry in Dialup Networking. To make it convenient, build a shortcut on the desktop. ========================================================================
