======================================================================== howto.lynx.cyrillic.txt ======================================================================== Cyrillic fonts. Most of this info was found by searching in netscape search for the keyword "cyrillic". Last edit: October 1998 ======================================================================== For linux lynx 2.3 or later running in on a linux console. ======================================================================== To run lynx in console mode with cyrillic fonts do a change of fonts in a console window setfont /usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts/koi8-8x16 and then lynx http://www.free.net/Docs/cyrillic/ Try the fonts listed there for compatibility. You should be able to read everything in cyrillic. ======================================================================== For linux lynx 2.3 or later running in X. ======================================================================== The basic source site is http://sunsite.unc.edu/sergei/Software/ which has links to the fonts mentioned below. First, setup fonts for X. Use the cronyx distribution and put them into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cronyx and run the makefile with "make". After success, delete all the *.bdf sources, which are no longer needed. Second, edit /root/.mailcap and insert the line text/x-cyrillic-koi8; more %s Do "xlsfonts |less" and search for "koi". If there, then start a terminal window by the command (could be put into fvwmrc): rxvt -fn -cronyx-fixed-medium-r-normal--10-100-75-75-c-60-koi8-r & lynx http://www.free.net/Docs/cyrillic/ Try the fonts listed there for compatibility. You should be able to read everything in cyrillic. ======================================================================== For unix lynx 2.3 or later running in X. This was tested on hosts: SUN, DEC ALPHA, SGI ======================================================================== First, setup fonts for X. Use the cronyx koi8-r fonts and put them into a private directory in your account as follows: cd mkdir ~/cronyx unzip /u/ma/gustafson/xfed/koi.zip (public access) cd cronyx mkfontdir cd First, issue these commands in a terminal window: xset fp+ $HOME/cronyx xset fp rehash Second, edit /root/.mailcap and insert the line text/x-cyrillic-koi8; more %s Now you are ready to launch an XTERM which knows about cyrillic fonts. xterm -fn -cronyx-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-koi8-r& In this new terminal window, use the command lynx http://www.free.net/Docs/cyrillic/ Try the fonts listed there for compatibility. You should be able to read everything in cyrillic. For more info, try the site http://www.ukraine.org/VKyiv/ The automation of all this depends on editing in emacs. The files to edit are ~/.mailcap ~/.twmrc ~/.xinitrc The XSET info goes into ".xinitrc". The XTERM launch goes into ".twmrc". The MAILCAP stuff goes into ".mailcap". In some cases the automation will fail. Do it manually and get some unix wizard help for the automatic part. ======================================================================== For unix netscape 3.0 or later running in X. This was tested on hosts: SUN, DEC ALPHA, SGI ======================================================================== Do the first 15 lines above for lynx first. After automation of the steps, all that is necessary is to start X. Start netscape. Choose OPTIONS on the top menu bar, then GENERAL PREFERENCES and select FONTS. Choose KOI8-R. Then click on OK. Choose FONTS again, then DOCUMENT ENCODING and finally KOI8-R. From this point on, the fonts should be switched to cyrillic. Test them at site http://www.free.net/Docs/cyrillic/
