Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, 7th edition, by Harshbarger and Reynolds. |
| Objective
and Contents: |
This course is designed to give the students the necessary mathematical tools for studying in the Business and Social Sciences. We will be covering the first six chapters in the textbook, which cover the following topics: linear equations and functions, special functions, matrices, inequalities and linear programming, exponential and logarithmic functions, and mathematics of finance. |
| Homework: |
Unless otherwise announced,
homework will be assigned each Tuesday and due
the following Tuesday in class. It is
highly recommended that students get extra
practice doing similar problems by working supplemental problems from the textbook. The homework assignments will be posted on the web page on or before the day it is assigned. Late submissions and submissions outside class will not be accepted. In the calculation of the final grade, one homework assignment will be dropped. Homework that has been ripped out of a spiral notebook will not be accepted. |
| Calculators: |
Students may use calculators on homework
assignments, but may use only a four-function calculator for
tests. |
| Tests: |
There will be three 60-minute tests during the semester. Please refer to the tentative course schedule for the dates and scopes of these tests. Alternative test dates will only be permitetd for truly extraordinary reasons. If you know ahead of time you will be unable to make any of the tests at the scheduled time and wish to take the test at a different time, you must request alternative arrangements (which may or may not be granted depending on your reasons) prior to the test date. Once the test date is past, no make-ups will be allowed. |
| Tentative Course Schedule: |
All dates are indicated on the Tentative Course Schedule and are subject to changes, especially those in the latter part of the semester. Test dates will be finalized and announced in class one or two weeks prior to each test. It is your responsibility to keep yourself updated on the finalized test dates. |
| Grading: |
Your grade will be determined according to: Homework is 35%, Exams are 30%, Final Exam is 35% |
| Final: |
The final examination will be comprehensive. It
will be held on Thursday, August 4, 7 - 9 PM in our classroom. |
| Mid-term Course Evaluation: |
If you have any comments, suggestions, or criticisms regarding this course or my teaching you could speak to me directly, or you could fill out the anonymous Mid-term Course Evaluation Form. I would appreciate your comments.
