|
| Contents: |
We will cover the material in Appendix
A, chapters 1-3, and chapters 7-9. |
| Homework: |
As this is a very large class, it would
be impossible to collect and grade everyone's
assignments, so our class will have weekly assignments
on WebWorks. The assignments will be posted by Thursday
afternoon and due the following Thursday by 9PM (except
the first assignment). Students can access the WebWork homework from a browser
and answer the questions online. In calculating the grade, one homework assignment will be dropped. The assigned homework is the
minimum amount required for the course, and it is highly recommended that the student work as many problems from the book necessary to completely understand the material.
|
| Grading: |
Grades will be based on homework, three
exams, and a comprehensive final exam. I do not curve
grades, so your work will exactly determine your grade.
Your grade will be calculated according to:
Homework is 39%,
Exams are 27%,
Final Exam is 34%. |
| Final: |
We will have a departmental final which
will be a comprehensive exam. Every Math 1050 class
will take the final on Friday April 27, 3:30-5:30 pm,
and it will be in our classroom, JTB 310.
|
| Tentative Course Schedule: |
All dates are indicated on the
Tentative Course Schedule and are subject to changes,
especially those in the latter part of the semester.
Test dates will be finalized and announced in class and
on the web page one or two weeks prior to each test. It is your responsibility to keep
yourself updated on the finalized test dates. Make-up exams will only be given in extenuating circumstances, and you must make arrangments
with me to take a make-up exam prior to the actual exam
unless the extenuating circumstance happens the day of the test in which case you
should speak to me before the end of the exam week. |
| Calculators: |
It is strongly recommended that students use a calculator for homework problems, but calculators and all other electronic devices will
not be allowed for any of the tests or the final. All of the computers in the math computer lab have calculators and computing software which the
students can use. If you don't have a calculator and do not need one in the future, don't worry about getting one now.
|
| Mid-term Course Evaluation: |
If you have any comments, suggestions, or criticisms regarding this course or my teaching you could speak to me directly, or you could fill out the anonymous Mid-term Course Evaluation Form. |
| Mathematics Tutoring Center: |
The Mathematics Tutoring Center offers free, drop-in
tutoring to students enrolled in Math 1050, among others. The tutoring center and
adjoining computer lab will

8:00 pm Monday-Thursday, 8:00 am -6:00 pm Friday. The
tutoring center is closed on weekends, University
holidays, and for finals. The tutoring center also
offers weekly group tutoring sessions for 5 or more
students (by request) to
serve more students more effectively. If you are
interested in this, you can schedule a meeting time at
the tutoring center. |
