Stephen Shipman's Abstract
Anomalous scattering behavior near guided electromagnetic modes
Interesting scattering behavior of electromagnetic fields in
periodic slabs is caused by the presence of guided and quasi-guided modes.
The anomalous behavior involves transmission and reflection resonances
as well as extraordinary amplitude enhancement inside the structure.
The nature of the anomalies depends on the robustness of the guided modes.
We calculate asymptotic formulas for these anomalies that depend only on
very general characteristics of nonrobust modes and not on the specific
geometry of the slab.
