Prerequisites

Calculus 1210 and 1220, Advanced Calculus 2210 or consent of instructor. Linear algebra 2270 will be required for 3220!

Syllabus

The aim is to cover the theory of one variable calculus with a strong emphasis on logic, proofs, and writing of mathematical arguments.

Text

We will use the following notes:
  1. Anne Roberts, "Basic Logic Concepts," (2005). Notes availabe for download: [pdf]
  2. Joseph L. Taylor, "Foundations of Analysis," (2007). Notes available for download: [pdf]

Problem sessions

One hour per week will be devoted to problems. You will be asked to present solutions to problems of the homework.

Homework

Homework will be assigned weekly (on Fridays) and will be due the following Friday, at the beginning of class. The assignments will be posted online (see bottom of the page). Feel free to work with your classmates. Nevertheless, if you work in groups, write up your own answers: homeworks will be graded individually. Part of your homework grade will come from your presentation. (see Problem Sessions) Important: when submitting a homework, follow these guidelines! No late homework will be accepted.

Exam Schedule (Tentative)

All exams are closed-book. No calculators are allowed. The final exam is comprehensive.

Make-up Policy

We follow the department's policy to not offer make-up midterms. The grade of an exam missed for a valid reason will be the weighted average of the other exam's scores.

Help

You can get help from a Tutor at the Math Center, located on the first floor between the two Math buildings (JWB and LCB). The hours are Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-6pm.

Grade

Your final score will consist in a weighted average of your homeworks (25%), midterms (25%) and exams (25%). Note that one fifth of your homework grade will come from your presentations. You can track your scores on WebCT/Blackboard.

Disability

Students with documented disabilities or other special needs that require special accomodation must register with the Center for Disability Services. After that, contact the instructor at least a week before each exam; we will need to have received confirmation from the Center for Disability Services.
