I've been asked to explain a little about how I handle combat. I use what I like to think of as the Nudge System. Basically when two people conflict, I look at the differences in ranks, not in the difference in points. Then I look to see what factors might affect the combat, such as another stat, wounds, stuff, multiple opponents, having a first place ranking, etc. If there is a factor, then I NUDGE the difference in the appropriate direction. Perhaps this would be more clear with an appropriate example.
EXAMPLE:
Molan: Warfare Rank 3, Strength Rank 5, End Rank 2, Stuff 2
Victor: Warfare Rank 5, Strength Rank 2, End Rank 4, Stuff -3
The battle starts with blades, and with Molan having just faced another opponent. This is blades, and thus Warfare is the prime stat. Molan has a 2 rank advantage. (5-3=2). Victor's Strength is decidedly better...
NUDGE, Molan has a one rank advantage.
Molan just faced another opponent, so he is a little tired, but he has high END, so END isn't a factor (yet). Stuff isn't a factor either, it taking large amounts of stuff to affect a battle. The result is a one rank difference in Molan's favor, which is practically a fair fight. Victor can take and dish out more damage due to his STR. The outcome of this battle would depend on how they fought.
It would pay for Victor to fight very offensively... this would get him hurt more, but he'd hit Molan more, and he needs to get the battle over fast. It would pay for Molan to fight defensively... he'd get hit less and could ride things out until END kicked in and he started getting things nudged in his favor.
More notes about combat:
STR, as noted in Shadowcaster determines reaction time. It is possible for a highly ranked STR character to act twice before a low ranked STR character can act. Psychic combat is SLOW. High PSY characters may get sudden flashes of insight, but unless your name is Fionna or Brand, even a human rank mind can hold out for almost
an hour before collapsing to a direct assault by fighting a defensive battle.
