Summer Solstice Climb of Mount Olympus

Justin and I got up early on June 21, 2002 with the intetion of climbing Mt. Olympus to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Unfortunately, the weather was not all that great. The wind was blowing and it was drizzling. The World Cup was also airing that morning. Justin woke me up around 4:00 am, we looked at the weather and were about to call it quits. He suggested we go up to school to check out the dopplar radar. We got up there and the system wasn't running properly, so we decided to go home and watch soccer. We went outside and the weather cleared. So we headed up. Here is the city waking up:

Here is Bobby waking up:

There was still snow/ice in the gully. ``Go THAT way, Bobby!''

``Okay!'' Sometimes we went on the ice.

Sometimes we went around the ice.

Here is our first belay. We didn't want Justin to go careening back down the gully now.

I found a comfy tree belay.

We stopped here on this big ledge for a small snack. From here we started simul-climbing. You can see how nice the weather got for us.

There's Justin way down there. With half a rope out, we were able to keep between 3 and 6 pieces of protection between us the whole way.

Justin fiddles (viola pun) with gear, and we both sport cool shades.

I arrive on top second. We had 3 pitches of simul-climbing; I led the first two and Just led the last one. All were spectacular!

``Justin, where is the University?''

``I dunno. Is that it?''

What a great day
