Objectives

This course covers the basics of algebra: the language of mathematics. To be able to use  mathematics effectively, one needs to be able to converse in its language. Our main objective is to get you, the student, comfortable with this language of mathematics and confident that you can use it to solve mathematical problems.  Competence and confidence!  Those are our goals. But having fun in the class is also our goal!

Coverage

P: Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Algebra (June 5)

1.1-1.5: Linear Equations and Inequalities

2.1-2.6: Graphs and Functions

3.1-3.5: Polynomials and Factoring

4.1-4.6: Rational Expressions, Equations and Functions

5.1-5.4: Radical Expressions

6.1-6.4: Quadratic Equations and Inequalities

7.2: Graphs of Linear Inequalities

8.1-8.2: Systems of Equations (also 8.4, if time permits)

Tests

We will go over the homework during the first part of each class, and I will check your homework papers periodically (particularly on the days when we have chapter tests scheduled). There will be three in-class tests, as shown on the `approximate schedule.' You may use formula sheets and calculators on these tests. We'll have the tests at the end of class periods so that you can take extra time to finish, if you need to.

Grading

Your grade will be based on homework and attendance (10%) and on the tests (30% each).

The grading scheme is as follows:

A at least 90%

B at least 80%

C at least 70%

D at least 60%

The +/- scores will be awarded at the fringes of these intervals.
