Mathematics Education at the University of Utah

To teach Mathematics well one must have a real interest in the subject along with a strong grasp of mathematical ideas well beyond the level at which one teaches. In addition, one must have a good understanding of how young people learn and think about mathematics, what their questions and problems are at different stages of growth. How one combines these skills and understandings in the classroom will depend on the individual teacher for as George Polya, a well-renowned mathematics teacher once wrote,

"Teaching Mathematics well is not a science, but an art."
