Topology optimization of bandgap structures

A periodic material may prevent the propagation of waves - this is known as the bandgap phenomenon. Examples of applications are photonic waveguides, mechnical filters, vibration and noise insulators etc. It is shown how the method of topology optimization can be used to design bandgap structures with improved performance and examples are provided showing design of mechanical as well as optical and acoustic devices.
