This course will be required of all first-year graduate students in the Fall semester. It will involve assigned reading of articles, and the conversion of one article (of the students' choice) into a talk with slides. Faculty will lecture on the follwoing topics:
  1. Writing skills: Generalities on writing, writing a paper, revising a draft, publishing a paper.

  2. Speaking skills: Generalities on giving talks, preparing a talk, preparing a slide presentation.

  3. Computer skills: Unix/Linux environment, LaTeX and BIBTEX, SLITEX, Matlab, Maple.
